Week 160: Eye Of The Tiger (USPSA Classifier CM 09-14)

Week 160: Eye Of The Tiger (USPSA Classifier CM 09-14)

Results may be posted until May 15th, 2016.

    Designed by: Russell Cluver
    Range: 7 yards
Target: three USPSA Metric targets, spaced 2 feet apart, with two additional no-shoots (see official stage diagram for placement)
Start Position: see below for details
    Rounds Fired: 6

This week we are going to shoot a USPSA Classifier as the DotW. See the official written stage briefing here: http://www.uspsa.org/classifiers/09-14.pdf

For purposes of the DotW, we may have some imprecision in placing your gear in the most appropriate Division, determining Major or Minor scoring, and possibly in your setup (if you have fixed target stands/rails that don't let you put the targets exactly the right distance apart, for example.) We are just doing this for the DotW, and no official USPSA score will result, so it's not a big deal if there is a little variation from official USPSA rules.

    ---

First, let's figure out your Division:

If your gun has a frame-mounted optic or a compensator, you are shooting Open. If your gun does not have a frame-mounted optic or a compensator, then you are shooting one of the other Divisions.

If your holster is forward of your hip, as with AIWB, you are shooting Limited (or Open, if you are shooting a Carry Optics gun from a holster forward of the hip.) If your holster is not forward of your hip, then you are shooting either Single Stack, Production, Carry Optics, or Revolver. Limited-10 is the same as Limited because there is no reload on the clock in this classifier.

If you are shooting a single action only gun, you are shooting Single Stack.

If you are shooting a revolver, you are shooting Revolver.

If you are shooting a double action or striker fired gun with iron sights, you are shooting Production. If you are shooting Production, then you are scored Minor regardless of your actual caliber or load.

If you are shooting a Production gun out of a Production-legal holster, but the gun has a slide-mounted optic, you are shooting Carry Optics. If you are shooting Carry Optics, then you are scored Minor regardless of your actual caliber or load.

    ---

For our scoring purposes, if you are shooting 9mm/.38Spl, then you are scored Minor. If you are shooting .357/.40/.45, then you are scored Major (unless you are shooting Production or Carry Optics, then you are still scored Minor.) Minor scoring is A = 5 points, B/C = 3 points, D = 1 point. Major scoring is A = 5 points, B/C = 4 points, D = 2 points. Misses are -10 points for both Major and Minor. Hits to No-Shoots are -10 points for both Major and Minor. Shots fully within the black area (hardcover) of the center target count as misses.

    ---

Standing in shooting area facing directly uprange, toes against the back of the box, hands relaxed at sides. Handgun is loaded and holstered. For the DotW, it's not too big a deal if you don't use a shooting box.

On signal, turn, then draw and engage targets with only two rounds each from the shooting area.

This Classifier is Virginia Count (no extra shots allowed.)

    ---

    Scoring:

    Add up your points.

Divide your total points by your total time. That number is your hit factor.

Divide your hit factor by the 100% hit factor for your Division to get your percentage on this classifier.

In USPSA Open Division, 100% is a hit factor of 9.50.

In USPSA Carry Optics Division, 100% is a hit factor of 9.07.

In USPSA Limited, Limited-10, and Single Stack Divisions, 100% is a hit factor of 8.48.

In USPSA Production Division, 100% is a hit factor of 8.06.

In USPSA Revolver Division, 100% is a hit factor of 7.63.

    95-100% = Grand Master
    85-94.9% = Master
    75-84.9% = A Class
    60-74.9% = B Class
    40-59.9% = C Class
    Below 40% = D Class

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Equipment used (pistol, holster, optional concealment garment if one was used)
    Division
    Total points
    Total time
Hit factor (points divided by time)
Percentage (your hit factor divided by the 100% hit factor for your Division)
    Anything you noticed

    An example:

You are shooting a G17 9mm handgun (no optic or compensator), carried in a strong side OWB holster. You are shooting Production Minor. You shoot the drill with a time of 6.00 seconds. You shoot all As, for a total of 30 points. Your hit factor is 5.00 (30 points/6.00 seconds.) Your percentage is 62.03% (your 5.0 hit factor/the high Production hit factor of 8.06.) You shot B class.

    You would report:

    G17, strong side OWB
    Production
    30 points
    6.00 seconds
    5.0 hit factor
    62.03%

I ran this one three times. I had to improvise with IPSC targets so take the times, as poor as they are, with a grain of salt. Tight shots like this really point out the negatives of a larger front sight.

If I could just shoot this good at matches.

Started cold and ran it a few times.

List is in order I shot them in. Slower times were due to my draw, turning on tacky dirt is tricky lol

Pic of target set up, the head holes are mine

These were used targets but I made sure to get ones with little/no head shots.

This drill felt so natural to me. Only time I made bad hits was pushing to make up for a bad draw, which obviously was the wrong thing to do.

Thanks man. I shot it some more but didn't record them.. No more mikes but more GM scores

When I started I was convinced B's were 4 points.. I was like WHHAAAAATTTTT when adding my scores up then realized I was adding wrong lol. I do awesome by myself. I can do everything sub consciously unlike matches.

Yikes! Rough run. I ran a few others but none were any better. The way I interpreted the stage briefing, the diagonal running from where the inside shoulder and head meet, there was more upper A available than lower a. Since in minor c/b are both 3 points, I just went head shot only. I still sucked and didn't get many points because of missing the upper a.

I set up the drill in today's live fire practice and played with it a bit.

About me: I'm a (probably under-classed) B-Class dood shooting Production. I am training hard in dry and live fire and want to improve my USPSA Classification and more importantly, my field course skills.

Shooting: EAA/Tanfoglio Stock 2 in 9mm, DAA belt, BOSS Drop/Offset Hangar, modified Red Hill Tactical holster

The Hit Factors (HF's) I need for various classes are:
    B: 4.8333
    A: 6.0416
    M: 6.8472
    GM: 7.6257 - Goal
    HHF: 8.0555

    My runs:
#1: 4.55s, 3A/3B -5.7HF, B-Class (what I am) - Slow draw, tried specifically target Upper A zones in head boxes with poor results, slow as balls...
    #2: 2.97s, 3A/3B, 8.1HF, GM - Let 'er rip! Oddly the same # of A's as run #1....
#3: 3.05s, 2A/4B, 7.2HF, M - I tried for more accuracy and picked up one more Alpha but my HF fell. Better to focus on speed.
#4: 4.28s, 5A/1B, 6.5HF, A - Targeted lower (body) A-zones for left and right targets but getting A's and avoiding no-shoots require too much caution. Back to heads
#5: 2.69s, 2A/4B, 8.17HF, GM - Went for speed on heads again. Observation - just shoot heads as fast as possible and try to maximize # of A-zone hits.
    #6: 2.90s, 4A/2B, 8.96HF, GM - A smidgen slower but 2 more Alphas. Luck or skill?
#7: 2.59s, 1 miss - TOO FAST, ran off the rails!
    #8: 3.22s, 3A/3B , 7.4HF, M - Meh, too slow...
    #9: 2.81s, 3A/3B, 8.54HF, GM - I'll take it. Just right (for me).
