Maybe this is a good a place as any to ask when we started referring to hardasses who kick in doors and shoot bad men in the face for a living as “pipe hitters.” I’ve always associated “hitting the pipe” with smoking crack. “Pipe Hitters” are crack heads.

It's morphed from the original meaning, (drugs, street thugs, crime bosses), to heavy hitters in the special forces. I come from the same background of referring to drug users with the term.

Lots of people will swear that the term predates the movie Pulp Fiction, but I didn’t start hearing the term in military circles until 2005-2006.

I thought it came from thugs/enforcers who used pieces of lead pipe as improvised weapons.(like in the boardgame "Clue").
