While I don’t condone this, I understand how it happens. Many FOBs in Iraq and Afghanistan required that weapons be carried unloaded and without a magazine in the chamber (ie essentially Condition 4). Moreover, you hard to clear your weapon and demonstrate an empty chamber whenever entering a building. So, soldiers got very comfortable with the concept that their weapon was empty…I’d argue too comfortable. This encouraged all kinds of reckless shit such as Mexican carry, necklaces carry (suspended from lanyard around the neck), Lethal Weapon carry, etc. You name it, I saw someone try and carry it.

I waited until the college age produce girl came over and I said to her in my best Clark Griswold imitation " These apples are Spicy!"

Then I quickly walked off as she was looking at me confused.

I am sure she thought I was sampling the produce..
