There are also decent Vietnamese and Thai restaurants along much of the Gulf Coast.

I figure Chinese food isn't great in most of the U.S. because it's been close to a century since there was significant immigration.

If you're ever in Fayetteville you should eat at the Fortune Cookie Asian Restaurant . Not on my recommendation but on my wife's recommendation. She isn't big on Chinese food(says they all taste the same) but loves this place. The food is excellent, and they have sustained a 100% cleanliness rating since they opened. Fantastic dumplings!
