Actually, once upon a time, I built a model F4 Phantom, and wanted to fly a real one, when I grew up. I still think of the Phantom as being what a “real” jet fighter-bomber should look like.

Edited to add: Once upon a time, in a century long, long ago, in a time before the Top Gun movie, IIRC, I watched a movie about the Red Flag school, in which the trainees flew F4 Phantoms. The aggressors, of course, flew much more nimble aircraft, to simulate Soviet fighters.
