My first Brittany (Epagnuel Breton), I spent ~$2500 on emergency life-saving surgery when she was about 8 or 9. She died at 14 when I had her put down rather than watch her continue to starve to death due to renal failure - wouldn’t eat much and couldn’t keep down much of what she did eat. She was exceedingly healthy until that first event, and only really had any health issues again at then end, when we spent some more money figuring out what was going on. Her sister is 11 now and is my constant shadow when home or out and about to places I can take her.

I don’t know if I will be able to handle doing this again after she is gone.

I've put down 5 dogs in my lifetime. This last one was the hardest. I think I'm finished. Just getting too soft in my old age I guess.

Our Brittany was 2 when we got her. It’s been 6 years now since we had to put her down at age 15. I wept like a baby in the room with her at the vet and for hours afterwards, and if I’m being honest I wasn’t myself for months. Even typing this is hard. I used to think people who got bent out of shape over the loss of a pet were snowflakes who needed to get their shit together. Not after that. My daughter adopted a rescue a few years ago and they come often to visit. That helped a lot.

We’ll get another dog after my wife retires next year and I hope (a) I’ll be around to the end, and (b) I’ll manage through that again.

Gracie is my last of 15 greyhounds adopted or long term fostered, we started in ‘95 and haven’t been without a grey since. We had up to five at a time. I can’t do it any more, I’m watching her age and know if I’m extremely lucky she will have one good year left.
