Ann Margret's portrayal of the homophobic mother was idiotic. The first clue we get of how closed minded her character is comes from a lengthy shot of the America flag on the front porch of her hovel if Fayetteville Arkansas. It goes downhill from there. The whole thing was a diatribe of smug, self-righteous, intolerance of conservative and Christian values. Ms. Andrews' "sophisticated and enlightened" view point was as idiotic and insulting as Ann Margret's character. Of course in the end, they bring the Arkansas hick around to the "correct" point of view.
A woman I'd always respected and though beautiful turned irredeemable ugly after that film. Can't stand her now.
