About the only two I remember straight out of boot camp was the prop wash and flight line straightener. I fell for both of those because I was sure they existed somewhere in the squadron. I was told by a few that they were fresh out but might be found in hanger 23. There was no hanger 23. After that it was always good for a pleasant walk around the base without doing some menial task like swabbing a deck that was already swabbed a few hours before. You learn to roll with it.
In the P-F basket of deplorables.

My ex-BIL was stationed on the Enterprise during Vietnam. He said he was told to go get some prop wash. He was way too smart to fall for that he thought. Somebody supposedly pulled him to the side and told him there was in fact something called prop wash- it was a solvent for cleaning helicopter blades. Not sure if he was pulling my leg. He was like that.

I expressed my disbelief at such a contraption existing. He was known as a joker and that didn't help, but I could see he was getting irritated so I "played along" and went to the tool room. In a smarmy-sarcastic voice I asked for it, got the facial expression from the clerk of "...why are you talking like that?" and was then handed a case and told to sign here. My flabber was completely gasted.

Modern version is cell phone service buoy. Any minute now, just stay out on the bow. It'll be coming along.

Anyone sent to me to get a bucket of prop wash is given a 5 gallon bucket of seawater with instructions to throw it on the party that sent them. If they're too scared I do it myself.

Was told the tale of a new hire on a construction job that was tasked with obtaining boxes of toe nails, board streatchers, and like. Knowing about the joke, he asked the boss if he could borrow his truck to obtain these items- then spent the day looking for and getting a new job, in his soon to be former boss's truck.
