I've never been a good speller, but I remember the warning my professor gave me the first day of Phonemics. She warned that if you were a bad speller, you'd be worse after this class. If you were a good speller, you likely wouldn't be after taking this class. To this day I just roll my eyes when I hear some body say, "sound it out." Sure, after you tell me language it derived from, what part of the country (U.S.) it's used in, and is it an industry specific phrase.

Naively and mention years ago, I asked a group of young Saudi women in my class (1st years) about gender relations in their country. They froze solid as statues and didn't speak. I didn't know at the time that their government had spies watching them.
