Roundabouts are 1 or 2 lane and slow speeds. Rotaries are multi lane and higher speeds usually connecting more than 4-5 roads.

Definitely a regional slang thing. Lots of people at least in my experience confuse one or another. Just because now they have to navigate a circle.
