I've never been a good speller, but I remember the warning my professor gave me the first day of Phonemics. She warned that if you were a bad speller, you'd be worse after this class. If you were a good speller, you likely wouldn't be after taking this class. To this day I just roll my eyes when I hear some body say, "sound it out." Sure, after you tell me language it derived from, what part of the country (U.S.) it's used in, and is it an industry specific phrase.
