Australia is pretty similar, in that it's way bigger than people think it is. I once pondered flying into Cairns, renting a car, driving to Hervey Bay to visit some friends, and go from there to Brisbane for my trip to the USA. Looks like a pretty quick trip on the map, yeah? They let me know it was about 16 hours of just driving time to get there, and another 4 1/2 to Brisbane.

I tried to drive across TX in one day back in 69. I was driving from Pensacola to El Paso. I'm sure a long haul trucker can do it but I failed. I was just driving in daylight hours. Just not enough daylight to do it in the winter. Port Arthur to El Paso, 12 hours.

“Royko”. My apologies, may peace be upon him.

Yep. Gives one a true appreciation of the vastness of the country. I drove from Seattle to Dublin VA and back again in the 80's. Not quite coast-to-coast but damn close, 2700 miles. Once east of the Rockies the landscape gets pretty boring, especially in the mid west. Virginia held some interest for me because of the antiquity of everything, but 1000 miles of corn and cattle can't really excite anyone but a farmer.

We've done Fort Worth <--> Tucson a few times. 14 hours each way. Booooring!
Drove SFO - - > ABQ in a day once. Much less boring.
