I originally had two - short story - took them from a rental, flea bitten, skinny, etc. Took them to my place set up a pen, with a cover and a kennel made out of a poly storage container. Kept them in that for a week to acclimate them to 'this is where the food is.' Also to get my GSD's used to them and them, in turn, used to the dogs - that part didn't happen.
Got them neutered and shots, when they healed up, I put collars on them with their names 'Bear' and 'Junior' and my phone number on them, much as your daughter did. Bear immediately took off for the east end of the block, I had calls about him for a week or so. Folks would call, I'd go pick him up, tell the folks he had food and water at our place, and if they didn't want him hanging around, don't feed him. I'm pretty sure he ended up in one of the homes I'd picked him up from, I always told folks that if they wanted to keep him inside, have at it. I think someone did.
Junior is very sociable and he has hung around the general area.
