I never asked, but based on a conversation when I was getting my pack out if the trunk after getting back from a camping trip, my former next door neighbor must have been a marine.

Sorry to interrupt the memes, but I used to do this for a living. I worked at Lockheed at NASA JSC, and we wrote an on orbit docking and maneuvering system for the space shuttle. It was pretty cool--we got to use the same training simulators as the astronauts. In the shuttle, you used the computers to compensate for the fact that thrusters were not at 90 degrees from each other (or through the center of gravity). You stood facing the back of the shuttle, looking up through a window. You had a flight joystick (which was controlled by the computers on an 8 second round trip delay to Houston) and a T-bar for in-out, left-right, and up-down for thrusters. Standard practice for the astronauts was 2+ hours to rendezvous and dock. We did it in 10-15 minutes. One of the guys I worked with came up with a different system for use with automated "assistants" (we couldn't say it was fully automated, because that was against doctrine at the time).
