My kid and I won the elementary school pumpkin contest one year, using modern psychological principles of visual search. The previous years, most families used round pumpkins with just facial carvings. So I bought a vertical asymmetrical elongated pumpkin. We carved a smile on one side with a frown on the other, giving a weird look. Then I put paper to fill the eye holes but attached green glow sticks behind the paper to have the eyes shine greenish. We won. Local dads - many of whom were Tektronix or Intel scientists/engineers flock to our for advice. Next, year they ditched prizes as the loser kids cried too much. The utility of visual neuroscience and the cognitive psychology of visual attention carried the day for us.
The idea was to use a pop out effect based on fast and rapid search for visual primitives (see Treisman) to get the judges' attention.
