Week 150: Distance, Efficient Reload, Perception

Week 150: Distance, Efficient Reload, Perception

Results may be posted until March 5th, 2016.

    Designed by: GJM
    Range: 25 yards
    Target: USPSA Metric Target
    Start Position: Holster (concealment optional)
    Rounds Fired: At least 6

The Derp Test (Distance, Efficient Reload, Perception) is a fun and very challenging test that GJM devised a while back. Start with handgun loaded with at least three rounds and holstered. At the start signal, draw and shoot at least two shots to the body and one shot to the head, reload (need not be slidelock reload), and shoot at least two more shots to the body and one more shot to the head.

Record your time and add up your points on target. Score the best four hits to the body and the best two hits to the head. Scoring is Major/Minor like in USPSA. For Major (.357/.40/.45 for our purposes), A = 5 points, B/C = 4 points, and D = 2 points. For Minor (.38/9mm for our purposes), A = 5 points, B/C = 3 points, and D = 1 point. Divide your total points by your time. That number is your hit factor (final score.) For example, if you are shooting 9mm and get 26 points in 8.50 seconds, your hit factor would be 26/8.50 = 3.05

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

Equipment used (pistol, holster, optional concealment garment if one was used)
    Total number of shots fired
    Points
    Time
    Hit factor (final score)
    Anything you noticed

Ok. Uploaded pic from phone, but typing on phone sucks.

Equipment: P226 SCT, Red Nichols OWB holster, light winter jacket
    Total shots: 6
    Time: 12.99
    Hit factor: 2.16

I shot this thing twice after shooting my Model 29 with 300gr Hornady Critical Defense and was terrible. The first time I sucked so bad I refuse to immortalize it on the interwebz. I realized I was strangling the shit out of the pistol because...well, because .44 magnum 300 gr. I shot it again getting back into semi-auto .40 mode (15.36) and then a 3rd time for keepsies and did pretty well.

Equipment used CZ 75 in OWB holster w/o retention
Total number of shots fired = 6
6 runs, in order Points / Time = Hit factor (final score)

    Run 1: 23 / 15.19 = 1.51
    Run 2: 22 / 14.43 = 1.52
    Run 3: 22 / 16.14 = 1.36
    Run 4: 15 / 12.57 = 1.19 (wheels fell off a bit here...)
    Run 5: 17 / 11.66 = 1.46
    Run 6: 26 / 13.07 = 1.99

    Anything you noticed:
    1) First time shooting on a target like this from such a far distance. Struggled with not having something to focus on from so far away, normally had shot 3x5 index cards or B8 centers which have pretty good contrast. Needed to really focus on making sure I aim for 'center' of the target.

    2) Related to prior point, needed to really focus on getting hits (watch sights, don't press faster than I can shoot accurately) which helped in the last run, definitely can do better there based on when I shoot B8, but need to learn how to not have a high contrast point to aim at.

3)Need to grip hard and move arms faster in pressout more consistently.

Feel like I sucked, will run this more for fun and to try and learn and improve.

D.E.R.P.'ed pretty badly today, missing tons of head box shots. Averaged a bit under 1.6, which was kinda disapp

    Run 1 = 25/17.37 = 1.44
    Run 2 = 19/12.09 = 1.57
    Run 3 = 21/12.51 = 1.68
    Run 4 = 21/12.18 = 1.72

Averaged a bit under 1.6, which was kinda disappointingly low.

Tried this again, was really inconsistent on the head box and that really showed. Getting misses killed my scores. Will do some dedicated 25 yard practice to the head box to find a reasonable blend of speed and accuracy. On the bright side, compared to the first time I ran the drill I had much better discipline to make sure I was getting mostly A's on the body and not just shooting right away when I saw front sight on the body.

Equipment used VP9, From concealment under hoodie, AIWB of my own make
Total number of shots fired 14, 10 at the body 4 at the head
    Points 28
    Time 29.36
    Hit factor (final score) 0.95
Anything you noticed: I decided to fire a good number of rounds at this one because distance shooting is a pretty clear weakness of mine as far as consistency is concerned. I’m not sure if I am interfacing poorly with the VP9 or if the sights are just slightly off. I was having some pretty consistent left pulls, even with shooting from a rest after the drill. Hmmm.

Equipment used: Glock 34, Safariland ALS holster, open front jacket
Total number of shots fired: Ran drill 5 times. Fired just the 6 rounds each time
    Points/Time: 16/10.37; 9/10.45; 14/12.69; 16/10.14; 14/11.20
    Hit factor (final score): 1.543; 0.861; 1.103; 1.578; 1.25
Anything you noticed: Could not get the head shots for the life of me. Only 2 hits in the B zone. Was actually surprised I got the lower A zone hits I did get. Had not used this holster for a while and messed up the first couple draws. Slide-lock reloads were not very fast, just tried to make sure they were smooth. I was getting A zone hits with the first shot in about 2.5 seconds. Went downhill from there on hits mostly pushing left so need to work on following shots. Need also to get this speed and accuracy balance thing worked out. At any rate the numbers look pretty bad compared to others but I think for me the results were actually encouraging.

Shot this drill a total of 4 times. The first three runs while in the middle of my range practice, and the fourth at the end of practice.

G19 in a blade tech phantom at 3:30 under a denim vest.
I fired only 6 rounds every time.

    1) This string was horrendous. I shot it in 7.08 seconds and missed one body shot and both head shots completely.

    2) 20pts / 9.67sec for a HF of 2.068 (only one A in the body, everything else B's and C's)

    3) 26pts / 10.01sec for a HF of 2.597 (all A's in the body, two B's for the head)

    4) 26pts / 9.43sec for a HF of 2.757 (all A's in the body, two B's for the head)

This is a really tough drill for me. I knew that going into it as my 25 yard shoot is absolutely abysmal.
