So much good stuff in here; I thought I would bump it to the top.
A couple of my own thoughts, to add:
Camera tripod bags/cases, particularly video camera tripod bags/cases, look really interesting. I have seen some used photo/video equipment equipment for sale, with very nice bags/cases, but the bags/cases were not being sold separately. Of course, any type of equipment bag/case is a target for theft/burglary, so be cautious. And, of course, in/near any place that prohibits photography, known photo equipment logos will attract attention.
On guitar/musical instrument cases, there is etiquette regarding bringing musical instruments into some venues, so be ready with your plausible story. I know little about this, but have taken BMV reports from musicians, and learned about this when I asked why they left their expensive instruments inside their vehicles when parked in known high-crime areas near music venues.
I've been looking for a low profile bag as well. Nothing necessarily zero profile, but everything I have now is either obviously a rifle bag or is meant for two longer guns. Bags meant for traditional rifles are a poor fit with a light mounted to the sight base, and the big case is just... big and unwieldly for transporting a single carbine and maybe a few magazines. And the way this country is changing, perhaps a slightly more discrete transportation option would be nice otherwise as well.
My problem is that most discrete carrying cases for 16" AR-15's are designed so the rifle is carried stock collapsed. Well, due to certain local legal retardedness, collapsing stocks are not an option. Does anyone have any idea what (hopefully inexpensive) cases would be a good fit for a 16" carbine with about a 13" fixed stock?
Has anyone messed with non-instrument-shaped instrument cases?
Something like this SKB tenor sax case could fit a ~14" barrel with the stock collapsed.

Split the upper and lower apart, and you may be able to fit a 16-in. in an alto sax case.

The soft cases still have some structure to them. They don't scream "musical instrument" to someone who isn't a musician like a Selmer hard case does. They're theoretically designed to protect valuables through a lot of wear and tear. Would just have to customize the interiors.
Although something like this in a bit better condition would have style points once you got to the range.

Tool storage might also be an option, although it doesn't scream "don't steal me" and isn't exactly "grey man" in a lot of locations. But in other places, it could be totally innocuous, especially if you actually use it to carry tools for awhile and get it a little beat and dirty.
