While S&W hand problems aren't too common in my experience, N frames are the most common victims due to the additional stress of the bigger, heavier cylinder. As JodyH said, that is a porous MIM casting (not common for S&W). There are still some good S&W 'smiths around, but the factory oughtta fix it for free.
