I have an Escort 8500, their best model before the put GPS's in them but only use it on extended trips. I drive with the flow of traffic. If traffic is widely spaced, more than say a quarter mile, I keep it within 5 or so of the limit. I haven't been cited for almost 20 years. Keep in mind though, a radar detector isn't magic. A patrol vehicle just over the crest of a hill with instant on radar is nigh undefeatable.

Good pilots tend to be very good drivers. I remember being on a fairly bad trail in a full size suburban and commented to the driver that it was obvious he was a pilot based on how subtle his inputs were in controlling the vehicle (Harry League was later killed in a crash with an instructor pilot in his Lancair....which are fairly high on the tough to fly planes). Folks who can operate high performance vehicles of any type and are compulsive about proper maintenance of their vehicles are generally not the problem. Also, the ability to stay calm in a crisis is essential. Unfortunately, most are on the road with none of these skillsets.

I also have been a victim of the camera cop. Now those things are b.s.

After surviving my youth and motorcycles, I tend to get a ticket about every 20 years. Last one I just wasnt paying attention. I hate paying the speed tax, so dont speed.

There is a place you can legally drive fast twice a year in Nevada. They close down 90 miles of state highway. Timed class runs for the entire length, with the big boys running over 200 mph for the 90 miles, and 1 mile and half mile shootouts. Looks like it would be fun to see.

When I moved to CO, I still had CT plates for a couple of months. I got 3 "red light" tickets in 6 weeks. each time I was turning right on red which is 1000% legal in Colorado. Since I've gotten my CO plates I have had no problems.

    Total BS.

Even that rule is flexible. Many high performance jets are allowed to bust it because they have better maneuverability and margin of safety at speeds faster than 250 knots.

Pretty much what I do. FHP is required by policy to give drivers 5mph with almost all giving 10-15mph.

Heck once in North Florida I was cruising along, and next thing I know I crest a hill and there are about a dozen cars pulled over, with another half dozen FHP cruisers lying in wait. I look in my rear view mirror and see a lone FHP cruiser on the top of an over pass. Just cruised on through, the FHP Wolf Pack didn't care about the rabbit doing 9 over on cruise control.

I haven't gotten a ticket in almost 7 years now. And that last ticket was due to passing some douche balloon bikers.

    Sec. 91.117 — Aircraft speed.

    (a) Unless otherwise authorized by the Administrator, no person may operate an aircraft below 10,000 feet MSL at an indicated airspeed of more than 250 knots (288 m.p.h.).
    (b) Unless otherwise authorized or required by ATC, no person may operate an aircraft at or below 2,500 feet above the surface within 4 nautical miles of the primary airport of a Class C or Class D airspace area at an indicated airspeed of more than 200 knots (230 mph.). This paragraph (b) does not apply to any operations within a Class B airspace area. Such operations shall comply with paragraph (a) of this section.

    (c) No person may operate an aircraft in the airspace underlying a Class B airspace area designated for an airport or in a VFR corridor designated through such a Class B airspace area, at an indicated airspeed of more than 200 knots (230 mph).

    (d) If the minimum safe airspeed for any particular operation is greater than the maximum speed prescribed in this section, the aircraft may be operated at that minimum speed.

I forgot about (d) as it never applied to any of the aircraft I flew.

I don't know where GJM is finding AZ DPS guys writing speed of 1 mph over. In the district where I work, nobody is writing cites for less than 10 over and probably more like 15 over for an actual cite rather than a warning. I will advise the local trooper on the radio if folks blow my doors off when they pass me in my unmarked vehicle. The troopers will write seat belt tickets without mercy.

Just had my first cite in 40 years, red light camera in Washington DC.

Buddy got cited in Parker for 1 over coming back from Prescott USPSA match. Think he had to pay before they let him go (res police). This popped up, too:

Patagonia, Arizona has been cited on the National Motorists Association’s speedtrap.org website [8] as having one of the nation’s most active speed traps. City police regularly conceal their patrol cars behind trees along Arizona Highway 82 where motorists enter the city’s outskirts. The legal speed limit drops in a short space from 55 mph to 30 mph leading to some drivers who are not alert being caught. The minimum fine for exceeding the posted speed limit even by 1 mph is $146.
