Week 131: Retrieve and Load (Table Start)

Week 131: Retrieve and Load (Table Start)

Results may be posted until October 25th, 2015.

    Designed by: Gabe White
    Range: 25 yards
    Target: USPSA Metric
Start Position: Handgun unloaded, on bench along with magazine
    Rounds Fired: 30

This will be a simple drill suitable for use on restricted indoor ranges. It will focus on retrieving the gun and ammo from a table-like surface, loading, then engaging difficult targets. If needed, any target with zones approximating an A-zone in the body and an A-zone in the head can be substituted for a USPSA Metric (a Pistol-Training.com target, or an IDPA target with 3x5 added to the head, for example.) This will be an untimed drill, so you will need to focus on getting the hits, while trying not to take unnecessary time.

Start with the handgun unloaded with slide forward, laying on the bench, muzzle downrange, with magazine also on the bench. Retrieve the handgun and load it, then shoot two body and one head shot. Then unload and return the handgun and magazine to the start position on the bench. Do ten total repetitions.

Please report the following when you post your results in this thread:

    Gun used
Total number of A-zone hits in the body out of 20 possible
Total number of A-zone hits in the head out of 10 possible
    Observations: anything you noticed

    Glock 19
14/20- A zone hits to body
4/10 - A zone hits in the head
Observations: I noticed a tendency lately to rush my shots, at all distances. My accuracy really begins to suffer as the target gets further from me.

Glock 34 w/ American Eagle 147. USPSA Metric target. Pace was a "careful hurry". Head 4/10 Body 20/20.
Glock 34 w/ WW 124 Nato. USPSA Metric target. Pushed it more and rushed most of the shots. Head 1/20. Body 14/20.

I don't have any USPSA targets so I used the Pistol Training target

Total number of A-zone hits in the body out of 20 possible:19/20

Total number of A-zone hits in the head out of 10 possible: 5/10

Observations: I dropped all my head shots in the center but just outside the

    Glock 19
    Head: 7/10
    Body: 18/20

    VP-9
    Head: 4/10
    Body: 15/20

Observations: This was my first trip out with the VP-9. I'm trying to keep an open mind about it. It feels good, but I absolutely shoot the Glock better. It is possibly at least partially sight issues (either my not yet being sure of POI for the VP-9 yet, and/or my eyes not liking the stock HK sights very much). Overall, very happy with my Glock performance today. Both of the body misses were first shots.

The worst sights Ive ever seen.
    15/20 body A's
    2/10 head A's

All my misses (and hits) were high. It's the first time shooting this thing past 7ish yards. All my body shots minus a few flyers were very tight (as in my first covered 90% of my body hits) which made me happy.

That head A box sure is small. I wish the drill was the head A and B zones

Total number of A-zone hits in the body out of 20 possible:10/20

Total number of A-zone hits in the head out of 10 possible: 0/10

Observations: Very tough this week. My eyes are playing tricks on me and shifting focus between my right and left and front sight and target. This drill did not go well for me this week.

Still trying out the P320 FS so I shot this drill twice.
Target used was a pistol training target

    Glock 19 gen 4
    16/20 for the body
    4/10 for the head

    P320 fullsize 9mm
    15/20 for body
    2/10 for head

    Observations:
I'm still scoring better with the Glock 19 but the sig is catching up.
I might have to set the Glock aside and and focus on the 320 for awhile.
I also need to upgrade the sights on the 320 the sig sights are a 6 o'clock hold on this pistol and it is not doing me any favors at this distance.

Total number of A-zone hits in the body out of 20 possible:12/20

Total number of A-zone hits in the head out of 10 possible: 3/10

Just to see what difference a dot could make I shot this again with my Ruger 22/45 with a C-More 6 MOA dot on top.

18/20 on the body and 6/10 on the head.

Observations: I might have to explore the idea of MRDS on my center fire guns

Total number of A-zone hits in the body out of 20 possible:11/20

Total number of A-zone hits in the head out of 10 possible: 1/10

Observations: I am not getting better at this drill at all, all of my misses are left, and without a time limit I can't figure out why.
