I thought the first episode of The Stand, the new one, was good.
However they did do a lot of jumping around with the timeline in that sometimes got a little aggravating.

I just saw the first episode of The Name of the Rose, an Italian series based off the original book which mixes 14th century history, theology, politics, philosophy and a murder mystery with a Sherlock Holmes like hero. It has quite a few good actors and, in the first episode, works well (though John Turturro's interpretation of Brother William is a little too saintly for me so far).
The book was a lot of fun (for those inclined to that sort of story, and hopefully for those who aren't) and I have good hopes for the series.
