I started watching Turn. I’m interested enough to keep watching.

For the most part, I thought it was a good series. For me it got a little meh after Andre's and Rodger's parts ended for all intents and purposes, but that's history. OTOH, the non-historical portrayal of Simcoe as a villain was a fine use of literary license.

Penny Dreadful (Netflix) - Various staples of gothic literature (Dracula, Frankenstein, The Picture of Dorian Gray, et al) are brought together amidst a supernatural evil besieging Victorian-era London. Great casting (including Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, and Timothy Dalton), great writing, great production values.

It's a Showtime series, so it doesn't pull any punches. Supernatural stuff usually doesn't hold my interest, and I probably wouldn't have bothered with it if I hadn't been home sick, but I'm enjoying it. Definitely worth a try if that genre is your thing.

That show, sadly because I enjoyed it, is over, so you can only stream it.

We enjoyed Penny Dreadful quite a bit.

The wife likes the supernatural stuff more than I do, but this series was well written and mature enough to be very interesting.

Watched all of taken on Netflix. The series not the movies. I enjoyed it a lot. Reminded me of the unit and one of the dudes was actually in it.

Hired Gun on Netflix. Documentary about session/ touring musicians, the guys we've probably all heard but their name isn't on the album cover, or anywhere else. As someone who knows zero about music and is fighting the urge to learn an instrument, I found it fascinating.
One guy went from playing for Hillary Duff to Alice Cooper's band. And Billy Joel's drummer of 30 years was unceremoniously fired after asking for a raise. Like a lot of things it seems like it can be very lucrative and rewarding if you're good, or miserable and unpredictable if you're slogging along in the trenches.
One interesting comment by Alice Cooper was how small the actual community of "professional" musicians really is. That there's only so many who have the skills, professionalism and attitude to play on an album or make it on tour.

You might enjoy "20 feet from Stardom" which is about backup singers.

Learning an instrument as an adult is painfully slow compared to the speed kids learn, but it is rewarding. I've learned a lot about how music works in the process. I have no natural talent and no ear but it's still fun to make music with other people.

Grand Sumo is over and Tochinoshin (from Georgia - not that one) won the Emperor's Cup in a surprise. He had good luck at two Yokozunas quite early (I think they wussed out as they lost early matches and then didn't want to work hard to catch up). One had to quite Sumo because he beat the crap out of a younger competitor in a bar brawl. The 4th had a lack luster tournament. My wife thinks I like sumo because of some similarity in body type (although I am half the weight of the big guys). Tochinoshin seems like a good guy and works hard. His country is all a twitter about his win.

It's a bit worse when you used to play then took a long break and are coming back to it.

I played trumpet from 7th to 12th grade and some in college. I put it away for 20 years. I remember what I used to be able to play and that I could play the notes, but I'm struggling now. My range is coming back and I've relearned the fingerings, but I have no endurance. I'm also struggling with transitions from high to lower notes. Still, it's satisfying to hear a song take shape after working on it for a while.
