    Hodgdon CFE Pistol 9mm Minor

Does anyone here have expericne using CFE Pistol for 147 gr lead or plated reloads loaded to 130 power factor? I am able to find this in bulk at a good deal.

Can't speak to that specific load, but during the powder shortage I tried it with .45 and .38 and found it to be a clean burning powder that's easy to meter. It should be pretty consistent.

I know some Open shooter that are using it - similar a bit to Power Pistol...

I bought a pound to test. Will work up a few loads and report back.

I though about picking some of the powder up, but what load data I have seen shows it in the slower velocity category. I try to keep my reloads close to defensive ammo velocities for the training benefit, so I wonder if the CFE powder is adequate.

Tried out my test loads today. My gun liked 3.9 grs with 147 gr TMJs.

    I loaded up 3.7, 3.8, 3.9, & 4.0 grs. Test gun is M&P 9 with Storm Lake barrel.

    1. Recoil was fine at 3.9 grs but seemed to increased noticeably at 4.0. It suprised me somewhat.
    2. 3.8 gr and 3.9 gr provided great accuracy. Group opened back up at 4.0 grs. Poor grouping at the starting charge weight of 3.7 gr.
    3. The powder seemed to be very clean burning and muzzle flash was subdued.
    4. Recoil and muzzle flip were perfectly acceptable for gamer loads.

Couldn't use my Chrony. Sorry for the lack of velocity stats.

Initials thoughts are that it may not be my first choice of powder, but it wouldn't hurt my feelings if it was all I could get. I will test it with some cast lead bullets and report back. If it doesn't smoke the powder will probably replace Tightgroup on my reloading lineup but not VV N320.
