My Middle East time consisted of one month in Egypt back in '83, but people with more recent, and wider, experience whose judgment I trust point out that the Israeli military is a) conscript, and b) primarily reserve/militia, and that they are generally at the level of a really good US/UK/Canadian Reserve unit pre-2001. One of them used the expression "A AAA team, playing junior high."
So, yeah, "Better than Inshallah/one step above Liberian Lifejacket Brigade" sums it up.
(I miss the old Brit Blog "Free Market Fairy Tales" with his running feature/competition "African Infantryman Of The Year." Regularly had to defend himself against accusations of racism, of course.)
