Steve, what are your thoughts on how far and how fast prices are likely to drop?

I believe prices will drop to around $12 a box for 9mm. Once it hits that area it will stay for a while. My reasoning is this: Ammunition Manufactures did not raise prices beyond a couple of dollars a box from what was the low 18 months ago. All of the inflated costs are being captured by the sellers right now. I used birthday pricing at Midwayusa and bought 2K rounds of CCI 124 grain blazer 9mm #5201 for $307.38 per thousand before shipping and tax. 2000 rounds came out to $691 with tax and shipping. (Midway charged me $43.10 for shipping alone) That order was on 7/1/2021. Midway put the original cost per thousand at $611.99 before the birthday pricing. There is no way they sold me that ammo below cost and I would bet they still had a healthy profit in it. So the question to be asked is what is the wholesale price of 9mm and I bet it is around $11 a box right now. They were selling it to me at $15.37 a box and had it on their website for purchase at $30.60 a box.

Interesting- as I mentioned earlier this week, I got free shipping on two cases of S&B 115 at $292.68/case, plus ~$40 tax total, on the Midway birthday deal, ordered Monday the 28th, sitting in my trunk yesterday, 5 days later. I think I caught free shipping by two days left.

Current price is $672.99 per case, so I feel I did OK, saving $380/case (which alone used to buy two delivered cases of that same ammo).

For quite a long time at the beginning of the price hikes, Midway held the line on pricing, and for a few months their prices were much slower to rise compared with most other suppliers. Not the general case now, but if one is patient one can get much better pricing out there, from a number of suppliers.

    9x19 147-grain HST and .40 S&W 165-grain HST $45/box of 50 at Lucky Gunner

Link. They also have other defensive ammo (HST, Gold Dot, Golden Sabre) at about $50/box of 50, plus Federal Hi-Shok at $43/box. A good selection of hardball, too.

They've also got Black Hills, HST, and GD in .40 S&W in 165- and 180-grain versions for $50/box.

Plus .45 ACP 230-grain GD for $49/box and 230-grain +P HST for $59/box, and various .45 ACP hardball loads for $35-40/box.
