    Stick on bifocals

The last year has been a tumultuous year for me as far as vision goes. I noticed a significant drop in the vision of my right (dominant) eye. I got to the point where seeing my sights was damn near impossible. I tried and liked the mono vision set up with my glasses and that seemed to work. For a while. Then around Christmas I noticed an ever greater change in my right eye. Just after the new year I started noticing a blurry spot in the top left area of vision when using just my right eye. It progressively got worse so I went to my eye dr again and got a new prescription. He didn't see anything significant inside my eye so I just went with the new rx. Then I woke up one day about a week after I went to the dr and couldn't really see out of my right eye. Was like someone put a piece of wax paper over my eyeball. Needless to say I was a little concerned. So I went back to the dr and after trips to several different eye specialists they figured out I had a cataract (unusual for a 41 year old). So for about 6 weeks I was down to using my left eye to shoot. It was doable and I actually was surprised how well I saw the sights.

Anyway, I just had cataract surgery (they also fixed my astigmatism while they were rooting around in there) and the dr thinks my distance vision will be 20/20 or better. But up close I still need readers. So I've been trying to figure out the best way to go about setting up glasses for shooting and started looking at the stick on bifocals. Anyone have any experience with them? Good brands? Anyone use them in gas masks (for SWAT) or dive masks?

They're a heck of a lot cheaper than rx sunglasses and I can place the lense exactly where I want it so it appealed to me but I have no experience with them.

You best bet is to talk with Robert Lewis at http://www.decot.com. He makes shooting glasses for Rob Letham. He is a shooter and knows how to set up your glasses. I am near sighted and his glasses work better then anything else I've tried. Good luck,

The stick on magnification did not work for me.

I was an ophthalmic tech before going to medical school, and I helped a few guys from our local IDPA club get set up for shooting post cataract sx with pretty good success. If the stick on bifocals are cheap enough they may be worth experimenting with as I have no experience with them.

If you decide to have a pair of dedicated shooting glasses made (this is what we did for best results), I would ask your ophthalmologist at your next post op visit if you can bring a pistol in, so that they can refract you with your front sight in focus. Another option is to have someone measure the distance from your eye to the front sight (pistol extended in shooting position) at home, then tell the tech or doc that distance while they are working up your prescription (it's a common request to have a "medium distance" or "computer distance" bifocal, so they should be able to do this fairly easily.) Afterwards, a good optical shop should be able to adjust the bifocal height to your preference specifically for shooting when your glasses are made.

Although - you mentioned that you were able to tolerate a monovision setup before cataract surgery; that may be a workable alternative if you can get used to it again. Right eye set at front sight distance, left eye at far distance, no bifocal at all.

During my aging eye transition, I experimented with these dual lens safety glasses that have correction in both the top and bottom portion of the main lens (http://www.amazon.com/3M-Dual-Reader.../dp/B008C0OS58). The top lens allowed me to keep my head in a forward shooting position vice tilted back from the typical bottom only lens in readers. These glasses worked ok at the range after some use. Not something you're going to wear all the time but it was an inexpensive experiment. Ultimately, I went the RDS route.

I use the stick on type. Got them at www.optx2020.com
I only use one of the stick-ons. I place it on the upper part of my shooting glasses lens, rather than on the lower part where most bi-focals are placed. Works good for me as I tilt my head forward when shooting. Good luck.

That's exact what I was thinking about doing. Do you wear them all the time like that or just when shooting?

The stick-on lens is on my shooting glasses all the time. So, anytime I have my shooting glasses on, the bi-focal is on the top of the right lens. In case you're wondering, when I hold my head normally, as when I'm acting as a RO, I actually look under the bi-focal and it does not interfere with my vision. Since the stick-on can be removed, I was able to move it around until I found the 'sweet spot' where I wanted it. ...jkm

Bottom line, I undercorrect my dominant eye with a contact and use a full lens magnifying safety glass to get back complete front sight focus.

Age and poor eyesight go hand in hand. I looked at every solution to correct my eyesight to continue shooting and found nothing that really worked. So I designed my solution. The problem was to find an optometrist that would implement my solution and then to find a lens grinder to make the lens. I wanted glass that I could wear 24/7, see my computer, drive with, read with and shoot with being 70 year old this was a big wish.
My solution was to get standard bi-focal with a small lens ground into the upper portion on the dormant eye side.

    The advantages are:
1 I can drive, read, surf the web, and see distance and shoot with them.
2 I don’t have to tell the bad guy to wait while I change glasses.
3 We all have a tendency to swing our arms slightly when shooting multiple target rather than rotating from the waste. These glasses cure that very quickly because if you don’t keep the gun under your dominant eye you’ll lose your front site focus.
4 You can see the target clearly and have perfect peripheral vision and by dropping your head down by 1/2 a degree you have your front site in clear focus.
    The problem are
    1 Cost
2 finding an optometrist that will allow you to bring the gun to their office and take the measurement while you are holding the gun in your shooting stance. The optimists must take his measurement while the gun is directly under your dominant eye extended. If the Len is too far right or left the glasses are worthless.
3 Find a lens grinder who can make the glasses, most do not have the equipment grind anything but standard glasses.
I do have an optometrist here in Atlanta that I worked for quite a while to get these glass made, that can instruct another optometrist how to take the measurements. He also can have the glass made.

Try to post a picture of the glasses but apparently it can't be done or I dont know how.
