Actually, they think that Madison's intent is irrelevant to interpreting the Constitution.
Instead, they think the Constitution should mean "what we want it to mean" and the "we" in that clause doesn't include anyone here. Instead, it includes only right-thinking people--mainly law professors--who can be trusted to come to the right conclusion.
And, of course, the right conclusion is that rubes shouldn't be allowed to own guns because they are yucky. Only the government should have guns because it is trustworthy and needs a lot of power to fundamentally transform the world into Utopia.
