The dedicated uppers are expensive, much more expensive than SBR'ing the 15/22 I have on hand. I'm researching rolling my own upper as well.

Had a taccom dedicated 22 upper that I ran on my sbr with a better mag... While good it doesn't compare with this:
Absolutely runs like a sewing machine! I went with a 7" barrel, swr warlock 2 peaking out the front of the handguard.
If you already have the 15/22 and a trust, gratification is only around $250 and 35 days away. Do it. You won't regret it.

NFA is a lot like motorcycles in that regard... it's hard to apply logic and reason to illogical and unreasonable purchases.
