10mm gel test: Underwood 140 gr Lehigh CF bullet

Underwood loaded 140 gr Lehigh Defense Controlled Fracturing Bullet fired from 4.5" EAA Witness through four layers of denim into calibrated 10% gelatin.

    BB: 600.2 fps, 3.6"

    Impact velocity: 1,432 fps
    Penetration of the base: 19.9"
    Retained weight: 81.4 gr

One petal penetrated approximately 10.5" and the other two both penetrated approximately 6.5"

There was no expansion, of course. The recovered base measured 0.393" in diameter and 0.344" long. The petals weighed 19.3 gr, 19.4 gr, 19.4 gr and one of them measured 0.369" x 0.336" x 0.150"

    viable self defense round?

    Andrew,

You were there and got a close look at the ballistic gel...it appears that a real nasty wound channel opens up upon impact. Is this as massive as it looks, and about how deep and/or wide a channel did it make? That one piece penetrating like it did is impressive.

Thank you for all you do

So they designed a bullet that purposely breaks into pieces, thus decreasing mass, potential maximum expansion, and resulting in a small caliber size core that over-penetrates.....ya, that is really smart.

My amateur read is they've designed a 10mm JHP which hits like a 9mm FMJ. Would that be correct?

The first few inches did look pretty impressive, but remember that TSC is not a significant wounding mechanism at that velocity.

If you had a bad case of the wiggles and couldn't decide whether you need to defend against humans and human sized critters or larger animals, it seems like this might be a halfway decent compromise for woods defense. I think a quality 165-180 gr JHP is a better choice for personal defense and a 220+ gr hard cast is a better choice for large animal defense.
