I think in the 7.62 performance would be very similar to the old -06, which wouldn't get through the best plates you can buy nowadays, but would certainly be extremely useful for most other jobs you might want your ammo to do on a battlefield.

Anyway, just thinking out loud as it were. IMHO we screwed up when we reduced everything to basically ball ammo for the rifle/carbine guys and ball/tracer for the belt fed guns.
So what you are saying is that it's time to drag the Garand out of the back of the safe and put an optic on it?

    Umm, no, not even close.

The Garand was obsolete in 1944

But yeah, I've met people who think exactly that

That suggests that the M-14 was obsolete before it was designed. It was a nice rifle, though.

Yes, the M14 was obsolete before it was fielded (especially given the advent of the AK47) and is a POS that needs to be retired. In fact, the M1 rifle was probably more reliable than the M14, yet even the M1 was obsolete before the end of WWII, once the MP43/StG44 hit the field.

They had to literally rig the test in favor of the M14 in order for it to beat the FAL as detailed in the somewhat dry but excellent book The American Rifle: A Biography.
