I like the gen 3s myself, although the gen 4s are nice too.
That RSA locking up due to debris as noted by JLW, and the Glock 17 being primarily a military pistol, I think maybe it will be around for awhile still.

His old unit doesn't seem to share that concern, as they purportedly have used those "no go for duty use" long slide Glocks in combat."Larry Vickers says the long slide models are a no go for duty use for that reason."
Likewise folks like Bob Vogel have carried G34/35's on duty as LE officers.
Facts matter...Feelings Can Lie
They (G34/G35) are the pistols of choice for many LEA Special Teams in this area and issued to all Uniform Patrol Officers at 2 local LEA's in this Parish/County.

My idea of a Perfect Gen4 G17 for carry.

My thought, (unverified by actually scientific chronograph testing), is that Winchester Ranger 127 gr +P+ in a G34 with its longer barrel takes it up to .357 SIG performance levels. I like getting that level of performance from a far more available cartridge...And it adds a potentially viable wilderness carry niche for the G34/G35.
While the sand/dirt/pebbles scenario jamming up a G34/G35 is certainly possible, I think for most it's pretty improbable. Alternatively, if you like the open-slide Tactical Practical Glocks and are concerned about it, it's nothing a strip of 100 MPH tape (or equivalent) wouldn't ameliorate.
Best, Jon
Lone wolf makes closed top 34-35-17L-24 slides. Never used one, but there's a couple standard type replacement slides floating around local matches without any troubles.
At least one guy had trouble with their barrels having short chambers, but to their credit they asked for the barrel back and some dummy rounds then reamed to fit.
