Flip-up optics protective caps: on or off?

Are they just {moisture, etc.} traps, one extra thing to deal with when you don't have the time, and should be ripped off? Or do they provide a worthwhile benefit that outweighs the downside of the time spent flipping them up when the time comes?

Depends on the quality and cost to replace your optic when the lenses get scratched.

Precision rifle- stay in place until at FFP. Flipped down at FFP.
Combative type carbine- Off when gun is not in storage. When I had AimPoint Comp M's, I kept the front cover closed always. I generally don't mind terribly replacing a T-1 compared to replacing the glass on my precision rifles.
Hunting rifles- Closed until on the hunt, then flipped down.

I routinely use Leupold soft covers on my hunting rifles. In rain, snow, in the boat, hunting in foggy conditions common in AK, you keep the covers on until ready to shoot or you WILL have to first clear your lenses of moisture/snow before the shot. I also carry a cotton bandanna in my front pocket for clearing the lens. Synthetic doesn't work.
