Times are changing. I was on active duty when the Beretta came on line. I think one of the advantages the Beretta had on the SIG at the time was the safety. Think back to the late 1970's and early 1980's and count how many auto's didn't have a safety lever. Fast forward to now. Count how many Beretta threads where folks complain about the safety lever on the Beretta. We are now through a generation plus, with the primary guns in civilian and law enforcement use having no manual safety at all. Even among the oldest and highest ranking of the current military decision makers, most probably have more experience with handguns without a manual safety than with a manual safety. Not having a manual safety on a handgun is not as big a deal today as it was back in the early 1980's.
Back in the 70s and early 80s the primary guns in LE didn't have safeties. They also had cylinders and didn't hold a lot of ammo, but they didn't have safeties. ;-)

As a young-er shooter, i'd even be bold enough to say hammer fired DA/SA guns are as obsolete as public phone booths. Even considering the DoDs woeful training problem, our line troops would be better off ND'ing lighter handguns with greater capacity and better ergonomics.

Beretta won the M9 contract because they underbid SIG not because the 92 had a manual safety.

Kind of makes one wonder why so many shooters want to be special and different with somewhat bizarre choices like Walthers, XD, Caracal, Taurus, or whatever the flavor of the month is, instead of sticking with well proven and supported handgun options that have been demonstrated reliability and durability in combat/duty conditions.

Even if i was jumping out of helicopters, i would rather have a VP9 going with me than a Glock.

honestly if I am jumping out of a helicopter it's really six of one half dozen of another when it comes to handgun selection... I would have a lot more on my mind than pistols.
