My dad was an aviation freak. He went into the "high school to flight school" program during the height of Vietnam because he knew that was the best way to get into flying.
He was introduced to aviation by Lloyd Stearman, who was his neighbor when Stearman lived in Dos Palos, Ca. He gave my dad, who was around 8, a model of a prototype pusher aircraft that he was designing. My grandfather told my dad that Mr. Stearman was a famous guy and that the model would be valuable one day. My dad put it one a shelf in his room for at least a week before he tied a string to it and tried to fly it by spinning it around in a circle. The Model did not survive.
My grandfather was a good friend of Mr Stearman and had a lot of funny stories about him.

Germany was trying hard to win influence in the area in the 1930s. Part of that involved selling Ju-52s at attractive prices. Parts and support for them ended in in 1939.

I've been doing some deep geeking upon the Dornier DO-24ATT, which is a restored 1944 German-built patrol flying boat (was a Spanish SAR craft until about 1970), updated with a modern composite wing structure developed for Dornier STOL cargo planes, new turbine engines, a modernized sponson setup to eliminate the original folding wing floats, and fitted with new retractable landing gear for land operations.
The project manager and pilot is Iren Dornier, grandson of Claudius Dornier, the original designer and builder of the plane. He probably has more hours flown in the type than anyone but the older Spanish pilots did.
Interestingly, grandpa Claude had these modifications for the plane on the drawing board at the time of his death in 1969.

There are videos on Youtube of John Mohr doing his airshow routine in a stock Stearman. I saw him a couple times in person-- he's one of the best to ever do it.
