I do not know how safe it is now, so it's hard for me to answer that. It was a bit of a risky venture then.

Knowing what I know now, I would not have gone then.

So today after work I stopped in my LGS. I’m on a bit of a red dot pistol kick and I found a good deal on a used P320X compact with a Leupold DPP. I put it on layaway but decided to poke around a little more. Suffice to say I switched my layaway when I found this:

5 inch Colt new service 45 ACP/ 45AutovRim with a nice action job. Colt website dates it to 1919. Someone installed a ramp front sight a Smith and Wesson Adjustable rear sight and stippled the top strap.

It had this Mark on the left side of the frame just under the rear sight .

I’m assuming that is the Smith that did the work. Anyone recognize that Mark?

    Same with Arizona.

You can be forgiven for switching to pick up this! Great looking old school blaster. Sorry, but I’m really not up on old Colts and their markings. Let us know how it shoots.

Since Photobucket decided to do what they did, I switched to another outfit, so I will have to re-post some 5"ers.

Well, that is not a gunsmith’s mark.

The "monogram" is that of Army Major (later Colonel) Gilbert H. Stuart, an Ordnance Inspector who retired as a Brigadier General.

General Stuart is on the right in the photo below.

I would have switched too. Great find.
