Thread: I love 3" Smith Revolvers

  1. #441
A bunch-o-pages ago, there was some talk about the 242. I just found a used one and ordered it. It looked like Tamara was a fan, and that's a good sign! I'm hoping to pick it up later this week.

Looking at it, I'm hoping to get the front sight swapped out for something like an XS (for a similar sight picture to my 43c) or a fiber optic. Since there weren't that many made, does anyone know which size front sight fits? Is it the same as other L frames, or, since it is an odd-duck Centennial model, does it take the same sights as similar J Frames?

Last, for holsters, again since they're so few they aren't often listed as supported models, do these fit holsters made for the 686+ 2.5/3" guns?

    Thanks for any help!

If you’re talking about a holster for the 242, it should fit in 686 holsters.

Yes I am. I'm guessing it would only fit in the 7-shot 686 holsters. Thanks!

Following up. After some (frustrating) back and forth with S&W Customer Service, they informed me of the part number for the 242 front sight. It's the same as the pinned front sight on many J-Frames, with a height of .145. I ended up ordering a Hi-Viz J-frame sight and it installed without any issues.

Any pics of a Model 60? I’m not hip on SWs but I’m getting more than a bit interested on longer barreled J frames.
