That a well-regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the proper, natural, and safe defense of a free state;
An interesting thing to do on a Saturday afternoon, no doubt, but rather than an APFSDS rounds, I'll take some flechette rounds. Those things really worked.
Only out of artillery; they are weak sauce out of small arms--remember ACR..."I'll take some flechette rounds. Those things really worked."

Doc: I know that you were attached to some Marine units. Did you ever see the effect of a beehive round out of a 105 mm tank gun? Amazing stuff. Not much penetration when you get too far from the bursting shell, but within 200 meters I'm not sure there is anything to match it.
You are correct about the small arms, of course, though in close a 12 gauge flechette round makes a mess.
I played around a bit with Firequest's 12ga flechette rounds in the mid-90's. Don't know if they're made changes to the design since, but most of the flechettes were loaded backwards, the plastic wadding punched through the flechette mass and exited first, and the flechettes tumbled right from the muzzle and failed to penetrate a cardboard target at 7 meters. The pattern was also huge.

I shot a 90mm recoilless rifle with flechette rounds at FT Stewart GA decades ago - going down range and seeing the impact of a mass of darts into old ammo boxes got my attention. Apparently, someone remembered; dusted off the old M67 90RR, and sent them to AFG for use by the 101st. http://www.clarksvilleonline.com/201...apons-arsenal/
Properly designed medium caliber artillery rounds loaded with flechettes is a far cry from launching them from a shotgun.
My observation and experience, with both home made and factory loaded 12 gauge flechette rounds mirrors what TM posted, as in it was really poor performance.
Even bee hive rounds lost favor to the Killer Junoir/Senoir technique of using quick time fusing to airburst rounds over an enemy at close range.
Back to the original video I've always wondered what a 3 1/2" round with a 1oz tungsten dart loaded in a sabot could penetrate through. There be no realistic use for it.
