Uh, I wonder if he is a SME on how to do mental screening? Do they teach that to Navy weapons instructors? I guess he's read the recent reviews of violence prediction in Psychological Bulletin, or the Annals of Epidemiology.

Everyone is such an expert on such things. I am so impressed.

Whenever somebody says "speaking as a" or makes the equivalent argument I feel the urge to hit them in the face with a pie.

"Licensing, to be renewed every five years with full background checks and mental health screenings, is the first step. "

Who is going to pay for this ? The Feds? We are trillions in the red-are we to add more to the till? Who at the Federal level will process these "checks"? The TSA? The EPA? DHS?

Gun control fans show a durable ignorance of reality. This egotistical putz should come clean and say he wants a total gun ban for everyone in the US except police , military , and himself specifically.

This guy is a progressive douchenozzle

Shawn VanDiver is a 12 year Navy veteran and adjunct faculty at three universities teaching military studies, national security policy, homeland security, and international security and trade. He manages corporate security and enterprise risk at a major tech company. He is a member of the Truman National Security Project’s Defense Council. The views expressed here are his own.
Here's all we need to know about this jerk's sociopolitical leanings:

If America is indeed to have a progressive revival, launching a new round of sweeping social, economic, and political reforms, the Truman Project will be a critical catalyst and resource. The Truman Project’s concept of national security understands the vital link between domestic health and welfare and international strength, between principles and power, and between international rules and international order.

While this guy probably doesn't know it, there is a gun control paradise near the US that would give him all the peace of mind he wants. This country forbids anyone from owning a gun or ammunition without specific permission from the police, and that permission is seldom granted. In addition, in a effort to keep guns out of the hands of criminals it has banned all gun stores in the country except one. That store--the only legal source of a gun for a civilian in the country--is in the capitol city and is run by the military to make sure that guns don't get in the wrong hands. To purchase a gun you must first get all the local paperwork and then travel to the capitol to choose and pay for your gun--and the store thoroughly scrutinizes purchasers.

To make sure that these laws work, they are enforced through the mechanism of draconian enforcement provisions. You can be sent to jail for years for merely being found in the possession of a .22 round.

It is, in a phrase, a gun control paradise. The type of place where common-sense gun regulations protect the population from the ills of civilian gun ownership.

The name of the country? Mexico. Those are Mexico's gun laws. They are some of the strictest in the world, just like Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the US.

Because, it turns out it isn't the laws that matter--it is the culture. The Dakotas have few gun laws, almost universal gun ownership, and murder rates that approximate those of now gun-free England. Mexico essentially outlaws guns, which indeed means that only the outlaws have guns, and a sky-high murder rate.

Maybe it's just me, but maybe this guy can explain why he wants to adopt laws remarkably like those found in Mexico?
