Just received my first Emerson, a Mini Commander. Initial impression's are positive. I see more Emerson's in my future.

I've had quite a few folders over the years, but I've spent the last 5 years carrying a ZT 0400ST. There was nothing wrong with it, but I wanted to buy myself a "nice/high-end" knife for myself for my birthday in October. Fortunately, one of my shooting buddies is a certifiable knife whore. After playing with a ton of mid-tech knives, I ordered myself a Chris Reeve Large Sebenza 21. After carrying it for the last 6 or so weeks, I finally understand what all the hype is about. It might not be the "coolest" knife out there, but damn... it's nice. Originally, I rationalized the cost by telling myself that the Sebbie was going to be the last folder that I'd ever buy. Now, I'm already scheming to buy another.

Now you need a Sebenza 25 and Umnumzaan to keep your 21 company! You'll never stop getting new knives. Face it, we're all addicts. I've had to start just rotating inventory with a few other knife nuts to keep the expenditure reasonable.

Ha. I was thinking of a Sebenza 25 and a Small Damascus 21 for when I'm feeling fancy.

Just picked up a Benchmade Mini Griptilian as an edc pocket carry. For chores like opening mail and cutting boxes it is the perfect size.

I'm a knife neophyte so I'm asking this honestly, not tongue-in-cheek...

What makes that folder worth the asking price (~$450)?
Tool steel is nice, but it ain't THAT expensive.

I've asked the same thing before...

Tassels and friendship beads attached to them seems to be prevalent too.

Because it makes orionz06 get all rageagainstthemachine-y, that's why.

I can explain it to you. I can’t understand it for you.

I started using Spyderco knives about 30 years ago and haven't seen any pressing reason to change. My usual is either a Delica or an Endura, depending on what I'm wearing and where I'm going.

The best thing I can compare it to is the 1911. Really minor improvements in aesthetics or functionality add significantly to the price tag once you get past a certain point. At first, I didn't really "get it" either. But, it was incrementally "nicer" enough in enough areas for me to justify the expense.
