Officer shot and killed during traffic stop today 7/30/14

This tragedy happened today. Mendota Heights, MN. Near the border of West Saint Paul. About 25 minutes from where I live. Officer Patrick stopped someone for a routine traffic stop. It's believed to be "routine" because Officer Patrick had not radioed for backup. Unknown at the time was the suspect had a warrant out for his arrest for a probation violation that would have put him in prison for 3 years. Not a lot is known at the moment concerning what happened. The general belief is that Officer Patrick was approaching the suspect's vehicle when the suspect opened fire, shooting Officer Patrick in the head and neck. Suspect fled and has yet to be apprehended.

Officer Patrick is a 19 year veteran and leaves behind his wife and 2 teenage daughters. Prayers sent for the family, friends, fellow officers, and the community that tragically lost this husband, father, friend and protector.

    Rest easy.
I had an ER nurse in a class. I noticed she kept taking all head shots. Her response when asked why, "'I've seen too many people who have been shot in the chest putting up a fight in the ER." Point taken.

Update: Suspect was found and came out of his car shooting. Officers returned fire and suspect is now in the hospital with an "unknown" condition. There was also a as of yet unidentified female in the vehicle who was struck by a stray bullet, but it wasn't life threatening. Hopefully the suspect's capture will bring some measure of peace, however small, to Officer Patrick's family.

A tragic reminder of the risk at which our cops put themselves every day.

A shame he (the suspect) is not in the morgue. Prayers are for Officer Patrick's family.
