Thread: Freestyle shooting at 25 yds revisited

And backing the last post up with 147gr HST If you teach, you gotta be able to do!! It would appear Gen 5s really like the 147s. 3500 rounds total on the Forward Controls prototype steel plate, testing done, pulled the RMR off and its off for servicing!

Got a 100-7X with a scratch X at 1 o'clock. I had a 100-9X in me, just trigger went to crap, super gritty and lot of hitches in it. Didn't help especially as fingers got colder. Need some polished parts in there, and or a G19M trigger bar.

Back to the G17/Dawsons in the meantime (slightly beats my G19 for precision), and off to one of my standard ass kicking drills :

10 shots slow fire Freestyle, 10 shots slow fire SHO, 10 shots slow fire WHO. Passing score of 270, all on a B8, so you gotta have a 90 average or better between all 3 strings. 25 Yds if your gun holds 2" groups, 21 Yds if your gun holds 3" groups, 18 Yds if your gun holds 4" groups. Y'all give that one a try!

Is that the same drill as Defoor’s hat qual except not from concealment?

Actually, yes, that is literally the same thing just not from concealment. But, considering Tim is a Single Stack guy, he had to reload mid-string, so it does have a little of its own spin.

I'd heard of the Hat Qual, but never checked it out. I'll have to play around with it.

My 92 Compact has been absent a while getting the slide refinished. Put a TJIB in it last week, and it's getting back in action. Shot an ok for me 25 yd FS with it today. Tried again with my M9 afterwards, and it was so bad it wasn't even worth attempting to score.

Can anyone tell me why the heck I can get fairly good (IMO, at least?) scores, and then have 2, 3, or 4 completely dropped shots at this? I don't get it.

What has really helped me is SLOWING down. Even though I already feel like I'm going slow, go slower. Treat every shot as it's own process, bring the gun back, taking a couple breaths and starting the whole process of presentation, sight alignment, and trigger pull again. Try and never stop the trigger moving once it starts. Also, really follow through. Keep the sights on the target for 2 full seconds after recoil.

IF (easier said than done) I do all those things I get my best results.

Just started shooting seriously again after another long hiatus. Threw a bar-sto barrel I had laying around into one of my old gen 3 17’s and did some verification at 25 yards with 147 HST.

Glock 17 MOS with ACRO. No timer, but this was less than 20 seconds. About 23 yards, indoor range not marked. I have not shot this a lot, but am working on shooting when dot on black and not trying for the “perfect” sight picture.
