Some of the EU/Nato SF (british SAS) run the laser further back due to weight / balance. FBI regional SWAT has been doing it for a couple years both for balance and because they simply use white light much more often than the laser.
SAS Operator Christian Craighead, now retired, has revealed the load out he wore when he stormed the Kenyan mall complex when it was under attack by al-Shabaab terrorists. Note the Laser placement.

That being said, most of the folks I know are pretty adamant that the best position remains as far up the handguard as possible.
If doing goon shit under nods is your primary function laser up front makes perfect sense.
