    Fixin' Stuff

Someone tried to peen a rail with a ball-peen hammer (I'd think). If you just need to be old school and peen a rail, use a flat faced body hammer. Snap on makes great hammers with a nice polished surface. Ball-peen hammers have too rounded of a face to do the job correctly.

Which meant welding up the area that was peened.

Doing it right means welding the area up. Micro-TIG works, but using a laser means no undercutting and a cleaner weld.

Sorry it took so long DB.

Damn, that is a nice weld! If I'd tried to tig it the entire front half of the frame would be big glob of weld

He told me that he used a punch with a step on the end (like the rail swaging punch that Brownells sells but much smaller). Are you going to be able to lay a bead on the underside of that rail where it is bent down?

I can. Do you want me to?

Bill, Can you educate me on the type of laser or micro-TIG specs so that I can hunt out someone local to do some welding of this nature for me. Specifically I'd like to weld up an extractor with the goal of increasing rim engagement and tightening up a sloppy fit so the rim will not slip out from under the hook during extraction causing an FTE.

Besides some pattern and machine shops I'm tight with I have some ins at the local university manufacturing tech center. Hopefully coming to one of them with a planned process will bring a happier outcome than shopping blindly for something they've never done before (adding material to tiny parts).

Sure - ours is a femptosecond pulse Nd:YAG system that we built. Has XYZ control, and uses a Leica microscope. Started life out as a Renishaw Raman System.

We have custom filler rods, but regular stuff might work. I'd strongly recommend stainless rod unless you intend on bluing the rails.

    Femptosecond pulse . . . Renishaw Raman . . . oughta do it.

Good thing we have the internet, otherwise I would have made a kitten of myself by accusing Bill of making up "femptosecond".
