It is robbery and suicide mitigation. I've never heard the reasons cited in the posted response from the range in question.
If you don't already have the ability (via firearm) to cause death or serious physical injury, we will not give you that ability. If a person with a working firearm wanted to commit suicide or rob us, they could do those things already.
It is an unfortunate rule when someone comes from out of town and legitimately wants to use the range but has no gun with them. Then it's a bummer.
