Ghost rings are funny. They are only slow up close if you force the issue. If you shoot the gun like a shotgun was intended to be shot, then they are as fast as anything, and offer more precision at range when you want it.
I don't have much experience with them, but I think true express sights might be the best compromise if you can't have a red dot.
Also, I pretty much treat my 870 as a big bore rifle, and only load slugs. Not the best use for a shotgun, but this is 2017 and there are just better long guns to take for professional use.
