It was either 1.5 or 2.0. My low ready was at .84 but it was my 2nd attempt and it wasn't the first shot. From the holster my time was 1.38 and I got it on the first attempt, my only regret was not having a video camera rolling for some of the things we did during 2 weeks of class/range time.

I would like to see how our 43 officers would fare shooting this drill. We will see I guess..

So, me and you can pass? It's gonna be interesting to see what the combat course will look like. I like the one I told you about yesterday because it's simple to set up but has enough stress in it to make people over think it.

For those reading this, NC has finally made combat courses part of annual qualification. It's a pass/fail event. This year we are to have officers draw, fire, and reload with their weak hand only. Griz, are we gonna run this one person at a time?

How did you make out with your revised training program? And what tweaks if any are you planning for this coming year?

The 4x6 box on my TxT target is for a set of drills that I run with my guys. From the low ready, we push for a shot in .5 and from the draw we push for a shot in 1.5. For each subsequent shot, add .25. They get a point for each hit in the box. They don't lose a point if the shot is outside the box but in the 8" circle. They do lose a point for any shot outside of the 8" circle.

The initial way we did this was by cutting a bunch of copy paper in half and stapling it onto an SQT.
I had an ER nurse in a class. I noticed she kept taking all head shots. Her response when asked why, "'I've seen too many people who have been shot in the chest putting up a fight in the ER." Point taken.

My initial alternate course was approved per the established standards, and then it was realized that there was an error in the published standards. The course was allowed for the rest of the year, but I have since written a new course that has more support hand stuff in it. It hasn't been voted on yet.

As for actual training, I ran several classes for all of our personnel such as the one in the above post and one in which everything had to be done with the support hand.

This year, I have a bunch of what I'm calling "50-round" sessions planned in order to get them to the range frequently. The first session we will be shooting the Wilson 5x5 and the Givens Casino drill on my TxT target. The next session will be shooting the Rangemaster Core Pistol Skills test. Both of these will be used to establish a baseline to measure performance improvement.

I'm also dividing the agency into two groups based on last year's qualification scores. Everyone scoring 95 and above is going to get pushed hard. Everyone below a 95 will focus on fundamentals. This was unanimously agreed to by our personnel.

The biggest thing that is going to impact training was that I convinced the boss to attend the Force Science Institute certification course. He is now a true believer, and he got off the plane with a list of training goals. We have a staff meeting next week in which he will be driving the point home to all of our staff. We have also been spending some money to try to get some of our instructors better training so that they learn and teach better material.

Good to hear that a combat course will be required. I like the direction that in-service seems to be going, in general.

I've been told that 2016 will see shooting on the move added to the qual course requirements. Have you heard the same?

One of the biggest and most common mistakes gun owners make is assuming that they are done learning how to shoot.

I was at NCJA - Salemburg a couple weeks ago and shooting on the move wasn't specifically mentioned. The actual combat course requirements start in 2016 and IIRC each agency can administer whatever combat course they want...it just cant change (make it easier or harder) dependent on the shooter(s) ability. Same/same for everyone in the agency.

We shot the instructors combat course which was 21 or so rounds and had you shooting from every conceivable position with weak and strong hands which also included drawing week handed. For the folks in the class, all firearms instructors, it was a fairly easy thing to do. However, that course would absolutley kill quite a few folks career as you have to pass it once in three attempts . The average copper who shoots once per year at prequal would not fair well. I hope we keep ours fairly simple to begin with to hopefully make people more aware of their weaknesses. Then in 2017 step it up to a higher level.

From a safety standpoint I would incorporate this into the combat course at the final firing point one officer at the time. Maybe conduct a transition from rifle or shotgun to handgun then conduct this exercise.

Griz, after you left last night we shot the 1-shot qualification (Rob didn't shoot it b/c he was cleaning that abomination of a pistol...Taurus...it ran fine on night quals). Every body was able to get the plate in 2.0 seconds or less. They also really enjoyed doing something other than just qualifying. Needless to say I am going to be doing more drills with the folks that really want to get better. If you need the plate let me know.
