That is correct. It’s a boiled solution and applied similarly as blueing followed by a water displacing oil bath. Brownells is a good source the solution and include easy to follow instructions.

How about parkerizing? That would give you the mat black
finish with plenty of durability. Cheap and can be done at home with a little garage kitchen.

Another vote for frozen water bottles. The best that I have found are 1L sterile water bottles that are used in medical facilities. They are rectangular and nest well together in a cooler.
