I have never had the colt style rip the skin off the side of my thumb either. The smith style, many times.
I would leave it as is. It was modified with purpose in mind. Nickle finish is not popular now but it was the original rust resistant finish. Enjoy it.

I don’t remember completely the history of the third model hand ejector. Like when smith made it a catalog item. I do remember that the Wolf and Klar guns were numbered with the second model hand...

That looks like the bolt timing is off. The old v spring colts had to have instant bolt movement at the movement of the trigger or hammer.

The d frame colts are four tenths of an inch shorter in the trigger guard and grip length compared to the k frame. The d frame cylinder is slightly smaller in diameter.
