Number one importance is getting all the schools in the district to buy-in on the idea that the building needs to be secure. I have no idea how it’s done in that part of FL but if the staff and faculty are all on board with simple things like keeping doors locked, that’s usually the biggest hurdle.
Number two should a heavy emphasis on patrol-level tactics training.
Once all that is sorted out, I think a secure safe in the SRO’s office containing a legit long arm would be money better spent. Hell, make it a .300 Rattler so it can be easily moved to and from the school in a sneaky bag if the school doesn’t want it there overnight.
And the idea is not to run to the office to get it, it’s only there in case the SRO is in the office when something happens. Out in the hallway, or cafeteria? Make do with your pistol.
