Who would have thought that 2 rounds, the 9mm Luger developed in 1901, and the 45 ACP developed in 1904, would be among the most popular self-defense pistol rounds in the world, 120 years later.
It's mind boggling if you think about it; all the other ammunition developments that were introduced in that same time frame. Yes, they have rivals, 40 S&W, 357 Sig, for example, but never supplanted.

Well, the .45 ACP 1911 was specifically designed to be similar to the various .45 revolvers, 1873 -1909 but the 9mm - .38 similarity is weak. It was a good while before there were heavy 9mms and light .38s for the ballistics to be very close.

Yes, the 40 S&W was a bright star for a while. Launched by the FBI after the 9mm bullet failures in the Miami Massacre, American LE slavishly followed the them.Quote:
